For a family business to transition from the first generation to the next generation, it needs to formalize its board of directors.
A board of directors is only as good as the directors serving on the board. At Family Biz Solutions, we train family directors for their personal and professional effectiveness. Built upon basic governance principles of fairness, accountability, and transparency, this program equips family directors with skills to apply these principles in family business settings.
Being a vanguard of the business mission, directors are encouraged to align all business interactions, processes and operations with it. The directors are equipped with a mindset that actively seeks understanding of macroeconomic conditions, industry updates, and comprehensive business knowledge. This preparation enables the board to effectively lead management staff and engage with other family members involved.
The program cultivates in directors an awareness of key business and economic risks. Participants are trained to ask probing questions such as “What-if,” “If not,” and “What about,” to uncover potential pitfalls in management thinking.
The program also highlights adoption of UN 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs) into business strategic planning. Ethical and other ESG considerations to be incorporated in business plans are also discussed.
The FDTP also stresses on directors to build their effectiveness by note-taking, asking great questions, networking, and being a resource provider.
